Newcastle United transfer rumours

As the January transfer window opens, Newcastle United look set to make strategic signings to bolster the squad, particularly in light of challenging results. The Magpies, under Eddie Howe, have shown a keen interest in strengthening key positions, particularly in midfield and attack, to recover their form in the Premier League.

With some players potentially exiting and others facing injury concerns, Newcastle’s focus seems to be on injecting fresh talent and energy into their team. This period is rife with speculation and anticipation, as fans and pundits alike keep a close eye on potential new arrivals at St. James’ Park.

What players are Newcastle linked with signing?

Speak to most fans, and they’ll identify a goalkeeper, number 6 (holding midfielder) and right winger as the priority targets.

However, fans know the club is restricted by the punitive FFP profit and sustainability rules, meaning big money deals are either unlikely or may need to be financed by player sales in the summer.

Here we take a look at the players linked by the media with a move to Tyneside.

1. Kalvin Phillips

Phillips, currently with Manchester City, is reportedly a top priority for Newcastle. His limited playing time under Guardiola might prompt a move to ensure his spot in the England squad for Euro 2024. A loan deal seems likely for the England international, who could significantly bolster Newcastle’s midfield.

However, there is set to be competition from Juventus for the former Leeds player, and City may hold out for an inflated loan fee.

UPDATE 27/12/23: The Telegraph reports that Newcastle are prioritising a loan move for Phillips.

Need: High – holding midfielder

Likelihood: 9/10

2. David De Gea

The experienced goalkeeper could bring a wealth of Premier League experience and a calming presence to Newcastle’s defence with Nick Pope sidelined long-term. However, he’s likely to demand telephone numbers in terms of salary. It might be that a lesser-known ‘keeper is brought in as a long-term Pope replacement.

UPDATE 27/12/23: The Telegraph reports that De Gea is keen on a move to St. James’ Park. With Newcastle’s defence looking desperate, the move looks more likely than ever.

Need: High

Likelihood: 8/10

3. Hugo Ekitike

Ekitike, now at PSG, had previously attracted interest from Newcastle. However, with limited action in Ligue 1, the Magpies might be re-evaluating their interest in the French striker.

He usually plays through the middle, although he has played on the wing before. Being left footed, he wouldn’t be a natural rival to Almiron on the right.

Need: Medium

Likelihood: 5/10

4. Serhou Guirassy

The Guinea international, making waves at Stuttgart with an impressive goal tally, has emerged as a potential attacking reinforcement. Guirassy’s release clause and scoring prowess in the Bundesliga make him an attractive prospect for Newcastle.

That said, with limited wriggle room due to FFP, a striker may not be the priority given the presence of both Aleksander Isak and Callum Wilson in the Toon’s current squad.

Need: Low – striker not a priority

Likelihood: 4/10 – release clause mooted to be low at £15m, but a centre forward unlikely to be a priority

5. Jean-Clair Todibo

Todibo’s defensive skills, combined with his ability to play out from the back, make him a valuable asset. His addition could bolster Newcastle’s defence with both solidity and a touch of modern defending skills.

As a centre back, though, he’s unlikely to be top of Howe and Ashworth’s shopping list.

Need: Low – centre back not a priority

Likelihood: 3/10

6. Khephren Thuram

As a central midfielder, Thuram has displayed a blend of tactical intelligence and technical skill. His energetic playing style and ability to contribute in both defensive and attacking phases could make him a versatile addition to the squad, while his ability to play as a number 6 might suit Eddie Howe’s plans.

Thuram is the son of former France legend Lilian, and brother of his other son Marcus.

Need: High – could operate as a holding midfielder

Likelihood: 6/10

7. Javi Guerra

The young star from Valencia has shown immense potential with his creativity and vision. He is able to operate as a number 6 or 8, but is best suited as a box-to-box player.

His rising star would likely command a large transfer fee, and Valencia have built their midfield around him.

Need: Medium – can play as a number 6, but may not be best suited to that role

Likelihood: 5/10

8. Boulaye Dia

Dia’s impressive scoring record and ability to lead the line make him a valuable target. His pace and clinical finishing could bolster Newcastle’s attacking options significantly.

Italian journalist Gianluca di Marzio even reported that Dan Ashworth went to watch the Salernitana player in December, alongside his team mates Lassana Coulibaly and Lorenzo Pirola (detailed below).

As mentioned before, however, as he operates mostly as a striker he may not be a priority for now.

Need: Low – centre forward

Likelihood: 6/10

9. Lassana Coulibaly

Known for his robust defensive play and ability to break up opposition attacks, Coulibaly could provide steel and stability to the Magpies’ midfield, complementing their more creative players.

He operates as a defensive midfielder, making him the most likely of the Salernitana options.

Need: High – defensive midfielder

Likelihood: 8/10 if Ashworth rumours are to be believed

10. Lorenzo Pirola

Pirola’s defensive acumen, combined with his ability to read the game, makes him a promising prospect for Newcastle’s backline. His addition could bring youth and resilience to their defensive setup.

As a centre back, however, you’d have to expect he won’t be the priority for now.

Need: Low – centre back

Likelihood: 4/10

11. Marc Guehi

Guehi’s consistent performances and leadership qualities have made him a standout defender for Crystal Palace. He would provide Newcastle with a reliable and commanding presence in their defence, but would command a hefty fee and is unlikely to be the main outlay given FFP restrictions.

Need: Low – centre back

Likelihood: 1/10

12. Benjamin Rollheiser

Rollheiser’s skill on the ball and ability to take on defenders could add a new attacking dimension to Newcastle. As a right winger, he meets a need. Furthermore, he currently plays for Estudiantes de La Plata in Argentina – meaning he may not command as hefty a transfer fee as options based in Europe. His agility and pace would be assets in breaking down opposition defences.

Need: High

Likelihood: 7/10

13. Jonathan David

David’s goal-scoring prowess and ability to find space in the box make him a lethal forward. But, as mentioned, a striker is not the priority.

Need: Low

Likelihood: 2/10

14. Matias Soule

Another Argentine, and another right winger, Soule’s creativity and vision in the midfield could provide Newcastle with an additional creative spark. His technical ability and potential for growth make him an exciting prospect for the future.

He’s a Juventus player who’s currently on loan at Frosinone, meaning an imminent deal is unlikely.

Need: High

Likelihood: 3/10
